Trendspotting: Golden Globes Fashion

Have to admit, last night was the first time in ages that I’ve actually remembered to sit down and watch the Golden Globes.  Usually, I’ll wait until the results and best/worst dressed slideshows have been posted to the internet to give myself an abbreviated re-cap.  I was actually pretty pleased with the show last night.  Ricky Gervais seemed to behave and Natalie Portman’s “He’ll sleep with me!” joke left me with just the right amount of uneasy.

More importantly, most of the ladies (and gents) attending the ceremony looked on point.  These nine dresses left a lasting impression on my 10-second attention span.  Unfortunately, they didn’t make Clare Danes turn around on the red carpet because this pic does her dress no justice.  Which dresses do you think stole the show? (ahem, Anne Hatheway)

Nighttime Nails

As I type this post, with NYE mere days away, I am realizing that I am in DIRE need of a manicure (Hello, cuticles!).  I think I’m playing it understated on the outfit front this year so my nails have to be outta this universe.  I’m thinking glitterxdiscoxsparkles galore… Here are a few of our fave ideas!

This gold has hexagon shaped glitters, and you can glop it on the tips for a french manicure that looks like you dipped your fingers in a bowl of solid gold nuggets, or you can do like this – one coat over a dark background to emulate the night sky!

SephoraOPIGoldGlitter

I love these Deborah Lippmann shades, too because they have a richness to them that makes them more sophisticated than your usual box o’ crayon colors.  Reminds me of Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface or Daryl Hannah in Splash!

Moon Manicure is so perfect for nighttime festivities.  See this twist on the lunar nail trend sourced from a vintage Cosmo feature:

I’m loving this look! You can swap out the Robin Red pictured here for black and gold or navy with silver… Wait, SILVER AND GOLD. So fab.

DIY Holiday Gifts

Alternative Apparel would be PERF for this one!

timo DIY

You can totes make this one with a Naked & Famous Bow Tie!

Does anyone remember when Nylon Mag used to have a DIY feature every month?  I remember sometimes it would be super complicated, with a list of ingredients like one elephant, a pound of Moroccan Cocoa Nibs, an industrial caulk gun and a tube sock.  Teen Vogue has a similar feature now, where they tap a designer to create a DIY project to share with all of us.  All of the archives are on their website, and while results vary from totally unwearable to cute attack, it’s fun to look through them for inspiration… especially when you find yourself breaking open your penny jar a week before Christmas.

Here are some good ones:

Inspiring Bijules

Just posting a nice article on Jules Kim, who came for our trunk show a few months ago!

“I’m not soft. [Guys] are not going to be able to approach me in [an easy] way. I distance myself with the way I dress and the way I am. It’s only a certain personality that would ever have the balls to approach me.” Jules Kim.

Go ahead girl, dress those fingers.

We were blown away when these puppies finally came in.

Iosselliani never fails to impress; with innovative designs and just the right amount of femininity without screaming cutesy, these rings are easy to put on and impossible to take off.

Not only are we in love with these rings but, our girls Alexa Chung and Madonna are also smitten with this Italian godsend.

Just in and obsessed! LowLuv by Erin Wasson!

**NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE!

Fashion darling, supermodel-skater turn designer Erin Wasson launched her new baby: LowLuv jewelry. Since its first debut at the Alexander Wang show last year, LowLuv has been getting a lot of attention for its anything but typical design. This season’s inspiration is desert of the southwest, which has been on Wasson’s creative mind all year long. This collection is priced fabulously at $40-$200, to our delight!

Winner of CFDA – Billy Reid

Our buyer Rachel is thrilled that one of the lines we picked up for Fall 2010 is named one of the CFDA winner!! Billy Reid!

Here’s an excerpt from GQ.com (see full article: http://www.gq.com/style/blogs/the-gq-eye/2010/02/and-the-winner-is.html):

Last night, at an energized, jam-packed event at Manhattan’s IAC building, we kicked off New York Fashion Week by celebrating the six finalists in our 2010 search for the Best New Designer in America. Each of the designers—from a transplanted Dutch veteran of preppy casualwear to two globetrotting (and enterprising) brothers—could have taken the title, but right now we couldn’t be more pleased to announce that the recipient of the 2010 GQ/CFDA Best New Menswear Designer in America Award (along with a $50,000 cash prize and the opportunity to create a limited edition Levi’s collection for Bloomingdale’s) is… Billy Reid.

A true fashion journeyman, Billy won the CFDA best new men’s designer award in 2001, but after investing in the production of his collection, his business was confronted with the grim reality of September 11th. Eight months after the attack, he moved home to Alabama, starting anew with his Billy Reid label in 2004. He now has seven stores selling clothes you could imagine William Faulkner wearing at his dapper peak, with bold shots of color mixed in at just the right moments.

Rikke Korff launches The Furies

Our buyers Catherine and Rachel bring new lines for Spring 2010, and we are definitely liking what we get! To start off the year with a thrill, we just got in “The Furies,” an inspiring new brainchild of Danish designer Rikke Korff.  This collection is without question, super fresh, edgy and highly fashionable. It is no surprise that The Furies is named as one of the top designers to watch by WWD! And, who doesn’t love black, black, and more black?

The Furies’ Rikke Korff – From WWD

Backstory: Denmark native Rikke Korff is best known for her 10-year stint as design director of Levi’s Red and Levi’s Vintage Collection. Korff, who studied at Copenhagen’s Danish Design School, helped reinvigorate the denim company with her cut-on-the-bias twisted-seam jeans. In 2005, she left Levi’s to start up her own firm, Korff Kounsil, where she consulted for lines including Levi’s, Lee Jeans and Quicksilver. The Furies is the Los Angeles-based designer’s first stab at her own label.

Collection: “The female market has become over saturated with frilly clichés of femininity,” Korff notes. “The Furies will unshackle feminine style.” The edgy, streetwise lineup includes strong graphic prints inspired by erotic Asian anime (“I have a severe crush on Japanese culture in general,” she explains). The silhouettes, meanwhile, veer sporty, comfortable and clean: oversize kimonolike Ts and draped pants, panung-style, in cotton. As for the label’s moniker, Korff notes that, aside from the obvious nod to Greek mythology, The Furies references the Japanese term for a swaying kimono sleeve — furisode.

See the world through Tom Ford’s eye(wear)…

tom_ford1

Seeing the world through Tom Ford’s eyes would be pretty extraordinary. Not sure if that’ll ever be possible, but what’s possible at least, is seeing through his sunglasses!

tom_ford2

The Whitney, which is the “Star” of the line, fits amazingly well on all sort of different face types and shapes. The plastic is tough and heavy weight, considering it’s slim frame. It is not flimsy and has a great shine and feel to it. The lens is just the right shade to show a little bit of your eyes behind it, and the slight grade of ombre on the bottom is a very nice touch for extra depth and dimension. Oh, and we aren’t currently carrying the men’s eyewear line, but I  had to put the (…ehem) naked male model from the latest Tom Ford campaign because it’s just hawt….!
