Lisa Mayock and Sophie Buhai of Vena Cava have graced us with a few moments of their time during a hectic New York Fashion Week to answer a few silly questions… Making us even bigger fans of Vena Cava than we were to begin with. Thanks Ladies!! <3
What’s one beauty/cosmetic product you cannot leave the house without?
LISA – DEODORANT. I HAVE QUITE A WARDROBE OF THEM.
Sophie- bobby pins!!! they are in every pocket, purse, crevice of my life.
What’s in your purse?
LISA- KEYS, WALLET, TIN OF ALMONDS, MAC RED MATTE LIPSTICK, IPHONE, TWIZZLERS
Sophie- book of all my lists, Armani lipstick compact, new yorker, a sharpie, fruit leather, matches from the Magick Castle in LA.
Quick! You’re in San Francisco for ONE day and you have to make it count. What are three things you would do to make it a trip you’ll never forget?
LISA – I REMEMBER A FAMILY TRIP TO SF WHEN I WAS ABOUT SEVEN- WE WENT TO THIS AMAZING HSUNTED HOUSE- THAT WOULD BE MY NUMBER ONE STOP. THEN RECORD SHOPPING, THRIFT STORES AND SIME CLAM CHOWDER IN A SOURDOUGH BREAD BOWL.
Sophie- go to Amoeba records, have tea at the St. Francis, join a Greatful Dead cover band.
If you could be a contestant on a game show, which show would it be and why?
I’D LOVE TO BE A CONTESTANT ON THAT ONE EPISODE OF THE DATING GAME THAT ANDY KAUFMAN MOONLIGHTED ON IN THE 70s.
Sophie- well, if antiques roadshow counts- i’d love to be on that. i’m sort of obsessed with that show- it’s amazing how much junk is worth!

After moving to New York, graduating Parsons and launching their line, Lisa Mayock and Sophie Buhai perfected their signature aesthetic by marrying vintage with geometric patterns and hand-drawn prints. They were nominated for the CFDA Fashion Fund Award in 2007 and 2008. Their pieces exude an edgy femininity that can only be described as effortlessly chic.

It’s back!!
For the entire month of September, bring in a pair of gently-worn, donation-ready jeans and receive 20%OFF any regularly priced pair in the store!!
Your denim donations will go to SFCASA, a local organization dedicated to empowering everyday citizens to become advocates and mentors for abused and neglected children in foster care. Shipley&Halmos never cease to wow us with their collections but, this Fall there’s something special in the air. Something flirty yet sophisticated… Something, fresh and young about their championed styles and we love it.
After reading a write up in Vanity Fair about their Fall 2010 collection, it all made sense. Their pen-and-paper visions had truly come to fruition. They were translated so clearly that, “their story for Fall… action and containment…” had been accurately interpreted through, “a hard, durable outer shell, with an ease of movement inside the clothes on the body, and super-comfortable, luxe linings,” Halmos said. (Vanity Fair)

Mike Gonzalez of Mike+Chris fame has found a way to bring all of his influential forces together to create a line that everyone wants to get their hands on. Working with Mike Diamond of the Beastie Boys to integrate a fresh take on street wear whilst fueling creativity with his love for his wife, Christine, Mike has been able to take classic styles to the high fashion stage.
His climb from hoodie to leather jacket to new wave elegance symbolizes the struggle of every artist. It all begins with a drawing, moves to a canvas, and up onto a wall. It’s just a matter of whether the artist (designer in this case) can remain true to himself and his aesthetic through the process of “making it big.” I think Mike Gonzalez has done just that through incorporating LA skate culture with classical form and function. See it for yourself:
